Oil Tank Demolition

In 2020, Rockaway National was on-site in South Amboy, New Jersey with the responsibility to tear down oil tanks that were no longer in commission and had been pushed off of their bases. After confirming with the property owner that all tanks have been properly cleaned out, we mobilized our crew and began the work. With a foam exterior on the tanks, our team was able to use machines to strip off the insulation and recycle it according to local guidelines.

The tanks were then cut open so we could safely and properly collapse the tanks into themselves as power lines and exterior walls were very close on 2 of 4 sides. After collapsing the tanks by using torch work we were able to use shears to cut them up and transport/recycle them offsite.

Power Plant Cooling Units

The Rockaway National Crew was on-site in 2019 and responsible for decommissioning a power plant in Ohio. Our crew was responsible for heading up OSHA outlined safety meetings on-site regularly, moving material out efficiently, and removing brass tubing throughout various cooling units in the building.

These cooling tubes were released after opening both sides of the cooling units to eliminate confined space requirements and then were tested for their metallurgy composition. Then, the tubes were loaded into a container and transported for domestic scrap sale. All procedures were documented and we worked in close contact with the onsite management and ownership teams to ensure that not only safety was met, but that profitability was maximized.

Decommission of Transformers

This job was completed in 2020 by the Rockaway National Crew on-site in Elrama, PA. Given the challenge of safely and effectively removing a transformer, we worked closely with ownership to get all paperwork and ensure that all oils were not only Non-PCB but also that they were properly disconnected from all power by OSHA and union certified electricians. Once these were disconnected the team was able to release the copper bus bar and work on the dismantling of the transformers.

After successfully opening them with fire watch at all times – the steel and copper were properly removed and recycled offsite into a domestic market. These units were completely cleaned and the areas were left as concrete pads and were properly handled from start to finish.

Dismantling of Steel Racking

One of our larger dismantling jobs recently was that one located in Atlanta, Georgia. Rockaway National was responsible for organizing the dismantling and removal of steel racking throughout a 3 million square foot warehouse space. While dismantling the racking systems the building management also contracted the team to be able to remove all of the steel sprinkler pipes.

This job produced many dumpsters and dump trailer loads of materials that were recycled through a local domestic mill. The job was swept at the end and all bolts were ground down as the landlord wanted the floor to be completely flush at the end of the job.

Multiple Forklifts for Scrap

One of our customers in New Hampshire called our Rockaway National team to remove several large forklifts. The job was arranged from the scheduling of the towing to the processing of the equipment to its end-of-life recycling process. All of the oil and liquids from the machines were properly drained and recycled through a local vendor. The forklifts then had their masts dropped down for safer transport and were loaded onto a flatbed with other localized equipment that was onsite.

The bodies of the forklifts were then winched onto a low boy and strapped down with metal chains before being delivered to a local processing center. All of the equipment had the serial numbers and identification plates taken off as CODs (Certificates of Destruction) were issued to confirm that these machines were destroyed.

ATM & Slot Machine Scrap Project

Rockaway National was called into work on the project of scrapping and recycling several ATM and Slot Machines in Las Vegas. We were tasked with not only removing and recycling this equipment but also processing the serial numbers and providing the proper paperwork for Certificates of Destruction (CODs). Tracking and recordkeeping were an important part of this job and Rockaway National was able to provide exactly what our customer needed every step of the process.

After properly recycling hundreds of pieces of equipment as well as documenting and tracking all of these through our R2 Certification Program- the customer brought us on to handle multiple other facilities that they owned.
